Star Wars

spain star wars stampsIn 1977, filmmaker George Lucas began one of the most famous and shocking film sagas in film history.Star Wars, or what is the same, La Guerra de las Galaxias as it is known in Spain, was initially formed by three films designed, written and directed for the most part by Lucas himself. Years later, three other films premiered as a prequel to the previous ones.Actors such as Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher or David Prowse participated in the films, turning them into a mass phenomenon, and even cult cinema with millions of followers around the world.

There is even talk of an “expanded universe” of the Star Wars world, which has to do with everything related to the saga but not specifically with the movies. Merchandising, animated series, television programs or comics, which have collaborated in endowing magic with the galactic world of Darth Vader or R2-D2, characters known and identified worldwide. Phrases like “I am your father” or the particular hairstyle of Princess Leia, have become part of popular culture.

Gallego and Rey

spain gallego stampsThis year, two new block sheets dedicated to the 19th and 20th century respectively are issued. Each one consists of 12 vignettes and a stamp.

XIX century. Each of the vignettes is dedicated to a character or historical moment. The Battle of Trafalgar, the War of Independence, the Constitution of Cadiz, Ferdinand VII, American Independence, the reign of Isabel II, the Carlist Wars, the Barcelona-Mataró Railway, Amadeo I, the First Republic, Alfonso XII and Son Alfonso XIII. The stamp includes an illustration where you can see characters from the previous times, some protagonists of the Epistolary School Correspondence series, about to sink.Twentieth century. In this case, the vignettes recall the Generation of 28, the loss of the colonies, Ramón y Cajal, the Barcelona Tragic Week, the Annual disaster, the Primo de Rivera dictatorship, the Generation of 27, the Second Republic, the Revolution of Asturias, Civil War, the dictatorship of Francisco Franco and the reign of Juan Carlos I. The stamp shows a drawing of King Juan Carlos I, with an olive branch, playing in the Chinese shadows simulating a dove of peace.

José Gallego and Julio Rey were born in Madrid in 1955. In 1980 they met in the newsroom of Diario 16, where a year later their first joint work appeared. Between 1983 and 1989 they published in this newspaper a daily strip on the political actuality.

Since then, they have become an essential of the graphic humor of our country, displaying a well-managed satirical humor, which despite reproducing sometimes the most harsh reality, they manage to draw a smile on their followers.
