Birth Centenary of Antonio Buero Vallejo
On September 29, 1916, the playwright Antonio Buero Vallejo was born in Guadalajara. From a very young age he was attracted to the arts, especially painting, but finally it was the theater that captivated him and that gave him so many successes. He studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando before spending a few years in prison after the Civil War.
In 1947 he was pardoned and a year later presented En la ardiente oscuridad and Historia de una escalera to the Prize Lope de Vega of the City of Madrid. Buero Vallejo received numerous awards such as the National Prize of Theater that he won in four occasions: in 1956 for Hoy es fiesta, in 1957 for Las cartas boca abajo, in 1958 for Un soñador para un pueblo and in 1980 for all his work. Also, in 1986, the writer won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize and ten years later, the National Prize for Spanish Literature.
