India Post Tamilnadu circle has released a special cover on the golden jubilee of Providence college for women on 1st July 2016 from Connor. PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, COONOOR is situated in the Nilgiris District, in Coonoor along the Coonoor-Kotagiri Road about 6 kms, from Coonoor Town.Mother Marie Therese, a zealous French Missionary belonging to The Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes founded Providence College for Women on 1st July 1966. Her aim was to serve the milieu without any distinction of caste or creed.
The Spring Field palace of the Cochin Maharaja became the college campus. It was fed and nurtured by St. Joseph’s Convent, the parent institution. It was affiliated to Madras University and from 1982 it is affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. The main building was used as the college as well as hostel for lecturers and students. Ms.Padmini Adeseshiah was appointed as the first Principal with three staff members and 31 students, 7 of whom were hostelites. Part time and full time Research courses with M.Phil. and Ph.D are also offered by the college.
