75 Years of Tom Poes

netherland tom poes stampsThese stamps are commemorating 75 years of the most famous Dutch stripduo Tom Poes: Tom Puss and Oliver B. Bumble. The ten stamps with two different illustrations feature the denomination Netherlands 1, intended for mail with a destination within The Netherlands. Frank Janse took the contrast in characters, in language and in appearance as a starting point in making the stamps.

Beautiful Netherlands 2016: Fishing Villages

netherland fishing villages stampsThe collective sheet of Beautiful Netherlands 2016 you will find typical objects and buildings of five fishing villages. These are the fishing villages Arnemuiden, Urk, Scheveningen, Zoutkamp and Volendam. On each stamp is a fish showing: partly on the stamp itself and partly on the background of the skin. Swim in the sea, other fish, including two pegs, a mussel, a dab, two sand eels, two shells and two jacks. The upper and the lower portion of each stamp are connected with each other by a traditional fishing net with a contemporary, bright color which is different for every fisherman place. On the top half of the collective sheet are typical facades of houses depicted in several fishing villages and each fishing village there waving the flag. Between the houses the statue of Gerard Bakker fisherwoman on the lookout. The stamp sheetlet Beautiful Netherlands 2016 is designed by Birza Design in Deventer. The selection of the five fishing villages was made in consultation between PostNL, the Dutch Centre for Folk Culture and intangible heritage and the designers.

Ed van der Elsken

netherland ed van stampsOn May 23, 2016 PostNL issued a stamp commemorating Ed van der Elsken. The stamp sheetlet comprises of nineteen color photographs of the photographer, deceased in 1990. The reason for issuing this sheet is the necessary restoration of the 45,000 color slides by Ed van der Elsken, affected by mold. This restoration project of the Dutch Fotomuseum was brought to the attention of the general public with an exhibition at this year’s parade, from 23 June to 28 August in the ports of Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Amsterdam. The work of Van der Elsken was used by PostNL for two issues in the past, Between Two Cultures (2001) and the Netherlands (2006). The stamp Ed van der Elsken pays attention to color photography of one of the most influential photographers of the Netherlands. The bulk of the photographs come from EYE LOVE YOU. This is the first color book that Van der Elsken published in 1977. On the occasion of the restoration project bringing Dutch Fotomuseum and publishers Lecturis and Bas Lubberhuizen this summer EYE LOVE YOU will be reissued.
