Steam on the Semmering

austria steam locomotive stampThe Semmering Railway was constructed under the direction of Carl Ritter von Ghega between 1848 and 1859, and today is part of the World Cultural Heritage. At the time of its construction, it was an outstanding engineering achievement whose precursors were few and much more modest. The technical, geological and organisa- tional difficulties that the planners and builders had to overcome were huge. The aim was to build a robust railway line without cables or other devices that would impede through-traffic across the heart of a wild and rugged mountain landscape over the lowest Alpine pass between the imperial capital Vienna and the then Austrian port of Trieste – a project seen at the time by many experts as misguided and impossible. Ghega nevertheless completed the gap in the railway network within only six years by keeping strictly to the maximum gradient of 1 in 40, the maximum possible for locomotive operations at the time, using looping curves through the valleys, brick arched viaducts and 15 tunnels. As a result, the Semmering Railway became the model for mountain railways around the world.
