In a bid to promote stamp collecting and give a platform for philatelists, the Madurai Philatelic Bureau has initiated monthly mini stamp exhibitions on different themes and an exhibition with the theme of ‘Teachers’ was inaugurated on the Head Post Office premises here on Monday. Prakash, Senior Postmaster, Madurai said that the theme was decided with regard to teacher’s day being celebrated on September 5 across the country. “Philatelists from the city can bring their collections for the themes which have been fixed and keep them on display as part of the mini exhibition,” he said.
For the present theme on ‘Teachers,’ stamps which feature activities and revolutionaries who have impacted the educational system as well as noted institutions have been kept on display. The stamp collection on display belongs to R. Selvaraj, a philatelist from the city.
“This is a great platform for philatelists to exhibit their collections as many of us have been collecting stamps with specific themes over the years. The theme next month is ‘Festivals of India’ and many of us are gearing up to showcase rare stamps from our collections as a part of the mini exhibition,” said T.J. Shanmugalal from the Madurai Philatelists and Numismatists Association.
Stating that more school children and college students could be made aware of stamp-collecting as a hobby, Mr. Shanmugalal said that they could visit the exhibition and see the stamps on display “We are also planning an initiative where the association has small displays at schools to encourage more children to take up this hobby,” he said.(Source-The Hindu)
