New Swiss Stamp on 125 Years of the USPS

swiss stamps 175 yearsOn 26 October 2015, the Union of Swiss Philatelic Societies (USPS) will be celebrating its 125th anniversary. The first collectors’ clubs began forming in Switzerland in the early 1880s. It was soon realized that it would be useful to create an association at the national level to enable important matters to be dis- cussed by all. In April 1889 the call went out in the “Schweizer Briefmarken Jour- nal”, the official publication of the three philatelic societies Philatelisten-Verein Luzern, Société Lausannoise de Timbrol- ogie and Philatelisten-Club St. Gallen, to create an association for the purposes of forming an “offensive and defensive alli- ance”. The objectives were to protect members’ interests and facilitate the discussion of important matters.
