Åland is a self-governed, demilitarized, Swedish-speaking region of Finland comprising more than 6,700 named islands. Since time immemorial, the islanders of Åland have made their living from the sea and seafaring. Thanks to its location in the Baltic Sea, halfway be- tween Sweden and Finland, Åland was always also a strategically important place for rulers and for trading. Since Finland joined the EU in 1995, Åland has also been a member of the EU, but it benefits from various exemptions, such as duty-free legislation which ensures the economic sur- vival of the numerous ferries that run between the islands and to Finland and Sweden. Åland’s economy is driven by services, especially the marine sector.
