On his 100th birth anniversary, Severino Montano joins the ranks of fellow National Artists that have been memorialized on postage stamps. It will be launched by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts tomorrow in Intramuros. Other National Artists who have been featured on stamps are Gerry de Leon (Film), Lucio San Pedro (Music), Felipe Padilla de Leon (Music).
Montano, a Yale University MFA graduate, is credited for professionalizing the theater industry in the Philippines with Arena Theater, which he funded with his own money and established while dean at Philippine Normal College. Before he died in 1980, he played mentor to theater luminaries like Rolando S. Tinio, Emmanuel Borlaza, Joonee Gamboa, and Behn Cervantes. He was a playwright, director and actor.
