Top 6 Tips to Inexpensive Stamp Collecting

\"\"Many people may be under the impression that stamp collecting or philately is an expensive hobby. It can be expensive if you\’re into rare and famous stamps which are mostly acquired through auction houses. But if you\’re collecting stamps for the beauty of the stamps, this hobby need not cost you much.

There are six common inexpensive ways you can start stamp collecting.

Friends and Relatives

If you have friends and relatives who occasionally write to you, tell them to use commemorative stamps on their envelopes. In these days of emails and video chatting, writing letters may not be an activity preferred by some people.

In that case ask your friends to at least send you a postcard once a month using a commemorative stamp on the postcard. Tell them you\’re starting a stamp collection and they would probably be eager to help you start with your stamp collection.

Be sure to emphasize to your friends and relatives to use commemorative stamps as these are limited edition stamps which are of much more value to collectors than the usual stamps. Tell them to request for these stamps at the post office.

Businesses

When you want information to be sent to you by some businesses, you\’re required to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Be sure to use a commemorative stamp on the envelope. You\’ll get back the stamp when the businesses send you the information which you\’ve requested.

Ask your working parents, siblings, neighbors and friends to save the envelopes that their companies receive. Some companies receive a great amount of mails from all over the country and even from overseas. You\’ll get a wide range of different stamps for your collection.

Old Letters

Some people save their old letters from way back when emails are not yet popular. Ask your parents or grandparents if they have these letters. Leave the stamp intact on the envelope. Tear off the corner of the envelope where the stamp is. Make sure that the perforations are intact. Any damage on the stamp would render it valueless.

Fellow Collectors

You can go online or ask around your neighborhood to look for other stamp collectors. You can suggest to them to swap stamps if they have duplicates. You may even suggest buying some of their duplicates if you don\’t have stamps that the other collector wants. Buying from a fellow philatelist would be far cheaper than if you were to buy them from the store.

Penpals

Look for penpals from all over the world. Tell them that you\’re a stamp collector and would appreciate it if they write to you using their country\’s commemorative stamps. Most people would oblige if you sincerely ask for their help in expanding your stamp collection.

Stamp Clubs

Join stamp clubs in your neighborhood and trade stamps with the members. If your neighborhood doesn\’t have a stamp club, you can always start one. It only takes three to five people for you to start a viable stamp club. You can then exchange ideas on how to get stamps inexpensively and even share your experiences in stamp collecting.

Collectors with passion to showoff the prosperity have made it expensive.Money power is used to collect block of fours, traffic lights of all four sides. Then any inadvertant oversight on the part of dealing staff is termed as Error n Uforia is created in the market by so called Patrons or Saviors of this hobby that a sort of mad rush is created in the market for the item.Men with the money ultimately suceed.Genuine collector with deep desire but limited resources are left high n dry.Recent example of 9 varieties of Rathyatra MS.Basically it is a simple, informative n educative hobby for the interest of all n not to become the personal domain of few who become self proclaimed GUARDIANS of this KING of Hobbies n Hobby of Kings. My apology to anyone who gets offended by my above views as I have no ill feeling for my fellow Respected collectors, seniors n Good friends.

I tend to agree with you, Anil, as there is substance in what you have observed. However, a hobby is for pleasure and the best medicine for stress busting. If you miss a couple of issues due to touts playing the market and creating a false demand for certain stamps, it is immaterial, and does not particularly affect a hobbyist, but definately affects a Philatelist. Many of us are not philatelists, but just collect stamps for the pleasure it gives us, and helps us beat stress. To us such small petty incidents do not matter in the least. I still have not got the Tamil Nadu stamp from the Phil Bureau, but I dont care. One good example of beating the touts was set by the US – the Dag Hammersjold stamp – where it was noticed that a few sheets had the yellow background color reversed in the printing. The matter came to the notice of the USPD and they issued intentionally the stamps with the reverse color so that the touts cannot take advantage.
I too remember that when some touts started cornering the Rajiv Gandhi stamp, I gave up collection altogether of Indian mint stamps. Philately has many many thematic and other options to branch into, so do not dispare.

It reminded me of FUGAL PHILATELY which of course serve the purpose of so called Low Cost Philately. Philately undoubtedly has become costly when one plans to collect COMPETITIVELY. Philately for joy and pleasure & philately to win awards are all together different and has only one big element to differentiate, and that is nothing but money. One has to choose one out of it.However, the points given above are excellent. One must also take care that philately is not only about BUYING but search and discover too.The real joy stays there only.

  4. Aayush says:

To be honest, many countries have stopped corresponding with letters and parcels. Indian commemorative stamps have become an investment and money-making businesses. For thematic collectors, all they get is packets which are mostly CTO material. Even common countries like US, GB, Switzerland, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, etc have a ratio of 80% definatives-christmas ratio.

I wonder when will these dealers realise that its just a hobby and too much of manipulation and tampering will make it extinct!
