Latvia Issued Stamp on Famous Painter Mark Rothko

\"marksLatvia  issued a stamp on world-renowned Jewish painter Mark Rothko. The stamp designed by artist Liga Cible depicts a portrait of Rothko and the names of the two most important cities in the painter’s life: Daugavpils and New York. The first day cover and special cancellation features the logo of the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center, designed in the color field style, which was pioneered by Rothko.

Mark Rothko (1903-1970) is considered one of the central figures in American postwar painting, representing the New York School’s abstract expressionism direction together with Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still. The painter was born in Daugavpils, but in 1913 emigrated to the United States with family. Rothko arrived in New York in 1923 and attended courses taught by Max Weber at the Art Students League of New York, learning about Cubism and the work of Paul Cezanne. The Mark Rothko Art Center in Daugavpils was opened in 2013.
