World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is an annual celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. World Red Cross Red Crescent Day is celebrated on the 8th of May each year.This date is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant(born 8 May 1828), the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarianmovement with approximately 97 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering, without any discrimination based on nationality, race, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, religious beliefs, class, allegiance, or political opinions.
It is a private humanitarian institution founded in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland. National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societiesexist in nearly every country in the world. Currently 188 National Societies are recognized by the ICRC and admitted as full members of the Federation. Each entity works in its home country according to the principles of international humanitarian law and the statutes of the international Movement.
