Ireland Issued Stamp on Gathering Ireland

\"gatheringAn Post has released a stamp on 24 January 2013, to celebrate The Gathering Ireland 2013. The stamp depicting elements of The Gathering\’s logo combined to form a map of Ireland. It has been estimated that one million Irish-born people are currently living in countries abroad. While the Irish diaspora is reckoned to be in the region of 70 million people, wouldn\’t it be great if they were all invited to come back to Ireland to celebrate their Irish roots?

That\’s the thinking behind The Gathering Ireland 2013, a massive tourism initiative that was officially launched by the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Minister for Tourism in May 2012. Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland are also giving their support to the project. The inaugural Gathering Ireland event – the US college football game between the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and Navy last September – attracted more than 40,000 American visitors to Ireland\’s shores.

The Gathering is very much a people-led project whereby community groups are urged to create local gatherings from clan and school friend reunions to events on a much grander scale. There are also hundreds of formal festival events planned featuring Irish music, art, literature, dance, culture, heritage, sport, film and food.
