\"china2012 marks the 140th anniversary of China Merchants Group. Throughout its history spanning three centuries, the prestigious enterprise has blazed a remarkable trail of development.

In 1872, the Qing Dynasty government approved the proposal advocating the establishment of an organization attracting investment for transporting grain from Jiangsu and Zhejiang, submitted by Li Hongzhang, a leading exponent of the Self-Strengthening Movement, resulting in the founding of China’s first national enterprise – China Merchants. The establishment of China Merchants marked the beginning of China’s modern shipping industry and raised the curtain of modernization in the country, occupying a special position in Chinese modern history of economic and social development. Since then, the enterprise has experienced a path of growth that mirrors the emergence and development of China’s national industry and commerce.
