Canada Post has honoured the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Coast Guard with a Permanent(TM) stamp featuring Canadian Coast Guard Ship Louis S. St-Laurent. The postage stamp featuring CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent is part of a five-stamp issue titled Canadian Pride.\”As part of a year long celebration for the Coast Guard\’s 50th anniversary, I am honoured to unveil this new postage stamp featuring the Louis S. St-Laurent,\” said Minister Ashfield. \”Currently the largest icebreaker in our fleet, this ship and its crew are a familiar and reassuring sight for mariners along our eastern and northern coasts. While the Louis St-Laurent is close to retirement, we are extremely excited that its replacement, the Diefenbaker, is currently being built under our government\’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy\”
Packaging for the Canadian Pride series highlights the Coast Guard, including the souvenir sheet which showcases the St-Laurent. The image on the cover of the 30-stamp booklet was taken from high up on board the CCGS Amundsen, a research icebreaker that provides Canadian researchers and their international collaborators with the platform and the tools to facilitate unprecedented access to the Arctic Ocean.The Canadian Coast Guard was created on January 26, 1962. Events and activities to celebrate its 50 years of service will be held throughout the year in communities across the country.
