In the Auction No.19, held between 29th August to 2nd September,2011 by famous auctioneers ‘Auktionshaus Christoph Gartner GmbH & Co. KG – Germany, Mahatma Gandhi FDC of 1948 fetched 2,400 Euros viz.  about Rs.1,63,200 (68 rupees=1 euro). The FDC was sent to one Mr. Balgopal, as registered within Calcutta with, Calcutta Sorting machine cancellation and , Calcutta Delivery’ rectangular post mark on reverse. Minimum bidding price for this item was 500 Euros.

    This is not a FDC as the cancellation is from GPO, it is not the FDC cancellation that is why it is only a First day cover used on the same day.


    I suppose that’s the Rarity of the item is in play here. An official Gandhi Mourning Cover used on the date of issue with full set of stamps .
    A regular Gandhi Mourning 1948 FDC,properly cancelled-very precious, but still just that.
