Jammu & Kashmir circle of India Post is organising 250 frame Philately exhibition at SKICC Auditorium in Srinagar from 26 to 28 Sep 2011. John Samuel Chief PMG, J & K informed philamirror that a large number of philatelists across India are likely to participate in this important event. Apart from the stamp exhibits, the Department is organising Stamp design contest, Letter writing contest and quiz program for the school students and college students. CPMG told that J&K Postal Circle is organising Philately Exhibition at Leh also from 2 to 5 Sep 2011 at Polo Grounds Leh. 80 frames of philately materials will be on display with special focus on \’stamps of Buddha\’ . Five special covers will be released during this exhibition. Floating Post Office cum Museum Dal Lake, Srinagar
Dal Lake, one of God’s wonderful creation in the Paradise on Earth, is a fascinating icon of the Kashmir tourism industry. The sparkling quiet waters of Dal Lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains on its three sides, undoubtedly mark it as one of the most beautiful lakes of India. Enchanting houseboats and enthralling Shikaras present some of the splendid scenery of the Dal Lake. Now, added to this, Dal Lake, Srinagar also hosts the first Floating Post Office cum Museum, aimed to attract the tourists visiting Kashmir.This was launched on 22 Aug 2011 in Srinagar by Shri Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communications & IT and Shri Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister J & K . The launch function was presided over by Dr Farooq Abdullah, Minister for New and Renewable Energy. Docked on the serene and quite waters of the Dal Lake, Floating Post Office cum Museum, housed in a house boat, offers a large range of postal services, apart from Post shop and Postal museum. Shri Pilot lauded the initiative and said that “this innovation by India Post will be a boon for the tourists visiting the lake. It was a befitting tribute to the lake, which is one of the most famous and often quoted symbols of Kashmir, and often referred to as the crown of Kashmir “
Addressing the function at Nehru Park on this occasion, Shri Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister J & K highlighted the importance of Floating Post office for visting tourists and the residents. He said “Your initiative to revive the facility of Floating Post office at Dal Lake is praise worthy. This will spur the growth and revival of tourism in the State” .Presiding over the launch event, Dr Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy appreciated Department of Posts for the initiative taken to introduce this novel service. He encouraged people to use postal services for better communication.
Mr John Samuel, Chief Post Master General said that this is the first Floating Post office in India where the Post office and Postal Museum are functioning at the lake, for the benefit of the tourists. He said that catering to the requirements of the tourists, this unique Post office provides ‘pictorial cancellation’ with Dal Lake backdrop on letters posted at this office.This is a Post office of a different kind where the Floating Post Office provides four varied functions- Post Office, Post Shop, Post Office Museum and Mobile collection and delivery of mails . Tourists get the convenience of sending their letters and parcels through Post to any place in India or abroad. What’s more, they get the packaging materials and Pre-paid Parcel Boxes to make it easy for them.
According to Mr John Samuel, Chief PMG, this initiative will bring a major turnaround in the revenue generation capacity of the Post office. For the benefit of tourists, this Floating Post office sells picture post cards, Greeting cards, books on Kashmir, stationeries and local souvenir items, along with the Postage stamps. This is the unique feature of this Floating Post office. Customers can also call their friends and relatives in India and abroad and send their email through the PCO services at this Post office.The Post office also houses Post Office Museum which showcases the history of the Post Office and the Postage stamps. People can also discover the world of fascinating stamps through the Post Office Museum.
Release of Special covers on \’Launch of Floating Post office cum Museum\’
To mark this, Department of Posts brought out two Special Covers on Dal Lake. The special covers portray the amazing splendor and magnificence of Dal Lake along with pictorial cancellation on launch of Floating post office cum Museum . The special covers were released by Dr Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister J&K and Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy. With this, the tourists visiting the Floating Post office will get the unique ‘pictorial cancellation’ with Dal Lake backdrop on their letters. No doubt, this will be a memorable souvenir in memory of their visit to Kashmir.Floating Post Office, Srinagar sells the special covers issued in this regard.
