India Recognizes the Republic of South Sudan:First Postage Stamps of Newest Country Released

JUBA – The Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has sent a letter to  Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan extending formal recognition of the Republic of South Sudan.“On behalf of the Government and people of India, and on my own behalf, I extend to you and the people of South Sudan our heartiest felicitations on the declaration of the independent state of South Sudan. We share the happiness of the people of South Sudan on this auspicious occasion”, he said.In the letter of recognition dated 9th July 2011, the Prime Minister also said that India has been closely associated with South Sudan and was present during the signing of the landmark Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Naivasha, Kenya in 2005.“We remain committed to the peace and prosperity of South Sudan and shall continue to partner with South Sudan in its development and nation building efforts in the years ahead”, the Prime Minister said.\"\"

 New postage stamps have been launched for the new Republic of South Sudan. According to Brigadier General (Rtd) Elijah Biar Kuol, the Director General for Administration and Finance in the Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services, 100,000 copies of the stamps have already been distributed to all the states of South Sudan.He said the focus will be in the rural areas where more than 80 percent of the citizens of the Republic of South Sudan live.
