US Stamp honors Nobel Winner Maria Goeppert

Marie Curie was the first woman to win the award.US Post released a stamp in honour of Maria this year.Maria Goeppert Mayer was born on June 28, 1906, in Kattowitz in the Upper Silesia region, which was then part of the German Empire.She was the seventh straight generation of university professors on her father\’s side.

The laureate had planned to study and teach mathematics, but found herself more drawn to the mysterious relations of matter and energy illuminated by the new quantum physics and earned her doctorate in 1930.Maria Mayer provided isotope-separation research for the Manhattan Project, which was an American-led project to develop the first atomic bomb during World War II.
