“FIRST DAY OF ISSUE” Cancellation

By  Sudhir Jain.

\"\"About 30-40 years ago, Indian Postal Department had established some Philatelic Counters also apart from the Philatelic Bureau. These Philatelic Counters were opened in the Head Post Offices of such small cities where Philately was popular. During release of every new stamp, Postal Department was providing a date changeable cancellation with the letters “FIRST DAY OF ISSUE”. That was the time when even in such small cities, new stamp, FDC and folders were available on the very same day of the issue. One such FDC with the First Day of Issue cancellation of SATNA Philatelic Bureau is exhibited here. Later on such concept of Philatelic Counters abounded.

Many stamp collectors in small cities will be benefited if this facility will be made available again.

  2. Dinu says:

What are you saying Mr. Kashinath? – restart this facility and help philatelist. No way this can be done by India Post. If this is done – then how will the thriving business of helping a few privieleged one continue?

You leave in a Utopian Dream Sir!!

We have developed – now FDC can be franked till 6 month. OK, it vanishes much before that is a different issue. Government cannot find a way to sale old unsold issues at premium – no cotrol on bulk sale before registered philatelist’s pre ordered requirement is fullfilled. Reason – stuff shortage. And you are increasing workload of them – what an idea Sirji.

Please do not make my laugh – You have to think about the money circulating in this hobby and many people (at right place and right position) are being benefitted by it. You want to snatch away this from them. Have pity on their soul – I pray to you.

If Authorities read outbreak of heart attack cannot be avoided. Just imagine you will be the cause of so many orphans them. Sir – have mercy on them.
    Amen

A First Day Cover has 3 things-the commemorative stamp, the
specially designed cover & the special cachet. Above omnibus `First Day of Issue’ cancellation FDCs hold good only when a
special cachet/cover is not provided for some issues. Like, several
definitive issues (4p Coffee Bean, 25p hatching egg etc.) & at least
one commemorative -Pin Code for Fast Mail Issue in 60p in 1989.
I never buy FDCs without their respective special cachet.
Still, no harm in getting one such FDC & using it actually, I suppose.
