Sri Lanka to Issue 4 Stamps to Mark 2600 Sambudda Jayanthi

Sri Lanka Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication would issue four stamps today on 14th May 2011  to mark the 2600th Sambudda Jayanthi centenary of the enlightenment of Buddha.The first set of stamps would be offered to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa by the Minister of Posts Jeewan Kumaratunga, the Ministry announced.The launch of stamps will take place ceremoniously at the auditorium of Sri Maha Bodhi in the sacred city of Anuradhapura.

The stamps depict places where significant events of Buddha\’s life took place; Lumbini where the Prince Siddhartha was born; Bodhgaya where Buddha became enlightened; Varanasi where the first sermon was delivered; and Kusinara , the place of his death.
