West Bengal Governor M. K. Narayanan today released a commemorative stamp at Kolkata in honor of Sister Mary Ward (1585-1645).College principal Sister Christine Coutinho said that it was the first Mary Ward stamp issued in the world.
The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Loreto sisters started the college on Feb.2, 1912 with 10 students. It now has more than 900 students for its courses in humanities, social sciences and education.Sister Coutinho said the college was started to prepare young women for the teaching profession.
