Independence Day of the year 1973 was very special day for the Philatelists of Allahabad (U.P.). On 15-08-1973 a beautiful stamp wasreleased on Gandhi & Nehru. A special stamp release function wasorganized at Anand Bhawan, Allahabad.Here one First Day Cover of this Gandhi & Nehru Stamp is exhibitedwhich bears three important cancellations.
1. Special Place First Day Cancellation of Anand Bhawan, Allahabad at the time of release function of this stamp,
2. First Day Cancellation of Allahabad H.O. Philatelic Bureau which isalso important place cancellation as Allahabad was the birth place of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and he lived in this building.
3. On the occasion of Independence Day, Indian Postal Department hadorganized a Philatelic Exhibition at Allahabad Head Post Office. A special Cancellation was also provided on this occasion.
Anand Bhawan was residence of Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi wasfrequently staying here during the Independence war movement. It is the ancestral and hereditary home of the Nehru family, the great freedom fighter Motilal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and also Indira Gandhi. The place has quite a historical value attached to it because several momentous and
important decisions and events took place here which were related to the freedom struggle.
Indira Gandhi had donated Anand Bhavan to the Government of India in the year 1970 which was converted into a museum. It houses one of the best-maintained museums of India and a memorabilia of the Nehru-Gandhi family. The main part of the museum is bedroom and study room of Nehru. There is also a room specially dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi where he used to stay during his Allahabad visits. A room dedicated toIndira Gandhi has on display many of her personal belongings.
