Sheila Dikshit, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, allotted Unique Identification Numbers (UID) to 12 selected students/Research and Teaching Assistants (RTAs) of IGNOU at the 25th Foundation Day function of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on November 19.
With this, IGNOU has become the first institution in the country to offer UID Numbers. The UID Numbers will contain the entire life cycle of the student and will be dovetailed into IGNOU’s the present and future students’ date base, so as to provide the facility of Learning Anywhere, Anytime and Anyhow.
Congratulating IGNOU on completing 25 years, Dikshit said, “IGNOU has not only completed 25 years, but has done so with excellence. All IGNOU Programmes are impacting lives. I am privileged to be presenting the UID Numbers to students here.”Speaking on the momentous occasion, IGNOU Vice Chancellor, Professor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai appreciated and recognised the contributions of the Government as well as international agencies.
“IGNOU is a success story in democratising education and training. The vision of Smt Indira Gandhi and Shri Rajeev Gandhi has been embodied in the functions of IGNOU. With three million students and successful public-private networking, we have become the World\’s Largest University,” Prof Pillai said.
Three major initiatives were launched on the Foundation Day function: IGNOU became the first institution in the country to offer Unique Identification Numbers (UID); Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between IGNOU and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for starting a collaborative PG Diploma programme in Bioethics; MoU with the National Museum Institute for promoting culture repository of museums.
Earlier in the day, Rameshwari Handa, Chief Post Master General, Department of Post, Government of India, released a Commemorative Envelope to mark the Silver Jubilee Year of IGNOU.
