Thousands of philatelist\’s in India collect special covers. “Special Covers” have greatly enriched thematic collections.India Post (Department of Posts) releases “first- day- covers” in large quantity. Special covers issued by India post with the help of several philatelic societies & other organizations on important occasions. At the time of philatelic exhibitions different types of special covers are issued. Some of them are still valuable & many of these are extremely rare.
Apart from philatelic events, special covers issued by various organizations to celebrate some memorable event. These covers are issued in a limited number and only a few fortunate philatelists who get them.
Private covers are also being issued in a big number by philatelists, many of them are really attractive and have collectors value.
Many philatelists are facing problems in getting special covers released on batter relay from many places. Many of them are collecting all these covers through healthy exchange; it is a good sign in Indian philately. Exchange among philatelists should be promoted and streamlined.
From this year India post has also increased fee for releasing special covers. It is a good step and it will definitely reduce the number of special covers, but the cost of these covers will also be increased.
We can see that philatelists are very eager to collect special covers and such great enthusiasm could easily be observed among the philatelists’ community.
Now when India post has decided to increase the fee for special covers, some more steps should be taken by philatelic societies to ensure reach of these covers up to philatelists who are residing far from the philatelic bureaus locations.
It has been a common experience that special covers were not available at bureaus and philatelists had to buy them at higher rates from other sources.
In order to improvise the facilitations for philatelists It would be far better if in future all special covers are serially numbered and sold only from philatelic bureaus or philatelic societies.
